The blood harmonies of Bonnie and Caitlin Drinkard have been described as other-worldly, honeyed, supernatural, powerful, elemental. Performing around the Detroit music scene for nearly a decade, both as an acoustic duo and as backing vocalists with the Craig Brown Band (Third Man Records), the Drinkard Sisters are ready to share their gospel of Cosmic Americana with the masses on their debut album, Enough Already. Produced, mixed, and mastered by veteran Detroit producer Warren Defever (His Name is Alive, Iggy and the Stooges, Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore) Enough Already keeps the harmonies at the forefront while the band lays down colorful layers that carry the Drinkards’ introspective songs into a twangy, psychedelic dream world. Between fuzzed out guitar riffs, hot pedal steel licks from The Scrappers’ Pete Ballard, and the drone of Defever’s Mellotron, Enough Already blurs the lines between Americana, psych-folk and indie-twang.

A chat with Drinkard Sisters

How and when did your band start?

As sisters, we’ve been singing together forever but in 2016 we decided to get a band together to fill out our songs we’d been playing as a duo – we asked some friends to play a couple of shows with us and Nick Landstrom (drums) and Ryan Harroun (bass) have been playing with us since then. Warren Defever produced our record and Pete Ballard played pedal steel on it and about a year ago we were in need of a guitar player and somehow we got both of them to join the band! This lineup is really our dream band.

What are the band’s biggest musical influences?

Bonnie & I have pretty divergent tastes that are all over the place but we both love Fleetwood Mac, The Everly Brothers, Tom Petty, John Prine, The Byrds, Van Morrison, ELO, Bonnie Raitt.

How has your music changed over the years?

We started out playing as an acoustic duo so we were pretty limited in how the songs would sound, writing with the band in mind has allowed our songs to really become the kind of songs we always wanted to make – songs you want to blast in your car on the way to go swimming.

How have you grown as a band and how has your following grown?

We went on our first tour as a band this year and that really tightened up our sound. Working with Warren has helped us grow so much, he’s been instrumental is helping us dial in our sound live so the songs come across the way we hear them in our heads. Our following has grown so much in the last couple of years, just from playing out more often and getting some airplay on the radio here in Detroit (thanks WDET and CJAM in Windsor!).

Do you have an upcoming projects or plans?

Bonnie and I are going back to Europe in September to tour with the Craig Brown Band and play some shows as a duo. Last year, we got to play in Spain, Switzerland, and Italy and it was so amazing to share our music in far off places. We are super excited to go back.

2 or 3 fun facts about the band:

People often ask us – how did you come up with the name Drinkard Sisters? As Lady Gaga says, Baby we were born this way.

Bonnie and Nick have known each other since elementary school.

We once drove over an hour round trip to get beer while camping on tour in a dry county in Kentucky. We are Drinkards after all…
